Anyone who’s ever made the big leap from salaried worker to freelancer will tell you that the experience can veer wildly between rich and rewarding and completely terrifying. It is not, in other words, all about long days in your pyjamas and leisurely coffee dates with friends.
That said, there’s always time for a funny video, especially if you can relate to it.
Freelancing Dreams Vs. Reality
Let’s start with those over-inflated ideas of what your life will look like once you’ve escaped the corporate rat race.
Produced by the good folks over at Buzzfeed, this video lays bare just how different the realities of freelancing are to the expectations everyone has before they start doing it.
Perhaps the most on-point part of the video is the crippling fear that emerges whenever you go through a streak of having no work.
What It Feels Like To Be A Freelancer
With the right client, freelancing can be a smooth process. You’ll just “get” each other. Sure they might ask for a couple of alterations to your work, but usually they will have briefed you well enough that the changes will be minor.
Some clients though will just flat out refuse to pay you for what you’ve done, even if they were so vague that you couldn’t possibly have known what they really wanted in the first place.
Zulu Alpha Kilo – Spec
Admittedly this video is aimed more at the advertising industry than freelancers, but there are still some big truths that they can relate to. How many of you freelance writers, for example, have been asked to write a sample blog before being taken on for a job (despite providing an extensive portfolio)? And how many times has the company concerned used the blog before declining your services?
Yeah, it’s tough out there.
Don’t give in though. Spec work is bad for you and everyone else.
Working for Free
Anyone who’s freelanced in the creative space has probably been offered work in exchange for exposure. Sure, that exposure might not be able to pay your rent, or buy you groceries, or anything at all really…but it’ll look great on your CV.
This video from Irish comedy trio Foil Arms and Hog imagines what would happen if you tried to ask someone in another profession, say plumbing to work in exchange for exposure.
